Terms of Use

Welcome to Hanzi Reader, operated by Studio Xi LLC ("we," "us," or "our"). By downloading, installing, or using the Hanzi Reader application (the "Service"), you agree to these Terms of Use.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Hanzi Reader, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

2. Description of Service

Hanzi Reader is an educational application that helps users learn Chinese characters (漢字) by:

• Scanning Chinese text from books and images using AI-powered character recognition
• Providing character details, stroke order, example words, and sentences
• Generating poems and audio pronunciation using AI
• Tracking learning progress across profiles

3. Account Registration

• You may use certain features without creating an account.
• To enable cloud sync and backup, you must sign in with your Google account.
• You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account.
• You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. Users under 13 should use the app under parental supervision.

4. Subscriptions & Payments

4.1 Auto-Renewal

Subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Your Apple ID or Google Play account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period.

4.2 Free Trial

If offered, the free trial period starts when you subscribe. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, you will be automatically charged for the subscription. A free trial can only be used once per Apple ID or Google account.

4.3 Cancellation

You can cancel your subscription at any time through your device's subscription settings:

• iOS: Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions → Hanzi Reader → Cancel
• Android: Google Play Store → Subscriptions → Hanzi Reader → Cancel

Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. You will retain access to Premium features until then. No refunds will be issued for partial billing periods.

4.4 Price Changes

We reserve the right to change subscription prices. Any price changes will take effect at the start of your next billing period. We will provide reasonable notice of price changes.

You agree not to:

• Use the Service for any unlawful purpose.
• Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of the Service.
• Use automated tools to access the Service (bots, scrapers, etc.).
• Upload content that infringes on intellectual property rights.
• Circumvent or manipulate any content restrictions or subscription mechanisms.

7. AI-Generated Content

Hanzi Reader uses artificial intelligence (Google Gemini) to generate educational content including character explanations, poems, stories, and audio pronunciation. While we strive for accuracy:

• AI-generated content may occasionally contain errors or inaccuracies.
• Content is provided for educational purposes only and should not be considered authoritative linguistic reference.
• We are not responsible for any reliance on AI-generated content.

8. Intellectual Property

All content, features, and functionality of Hanzi Reader (including but not limited to text, graphics, logos, icons, and software) are owned by Studio Xi LLC and are protected by copyright and trademark laws.

Content contributed to the global knowledge base (character details, poems) is shared under a community license for the benefit of all users.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. WE DO NOT GUARANTEE THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR THAT AI-GENERATED CONTENT WILL BE ACCURATE.

10. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, STUDIO XI LLC SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT PAID BY YOU IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM.

11. Termination

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time for violation of these Terms. Upon termination, your right to use the Service will cease immediately.

12. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

13. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated Terms on this page. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.
